Passive Aggressive Notes

“For the purposes of this project, we’re using a pretty broad definition of “passive-aggressive” that roughly correlates with how the term is popularly (rather than clinically) used. As the New York Times wrote: “The classic description of the behavior captures a stubborn malcontent, someone who passively resists fulfilling routine tasks, complains of being misunderstood and underappreciated, unreasonably scorns authority and voices exaggerated complaints of personal misfortune.”

That said, many of the notes found here aren’t really passive-aggressive even by our generous standards. Some of these notes are really more aggressive in tone, and some of them are more passive — polite, even — but for the most part they share a common sense of frustration that’s been channeled into written form rather than a direct confrontation. It’s barbed criticism disguised as something else — helpful advice, a funny joke, simple forgetfulness. After all, as Dr. Scott Wetzler, a clinical psychologist and author of Living with the Passive-Aggressive man, observed: “A joke can be the most skillful passive-aggressive act there is.”” – WTF?

I’m sure you’ve encountered your fair share of people in your lifetime who have so utterly annoyed, aggravated or angered you but , for one reason or another, you were unable to unleash the wrath within you. What can you do then when a face to face confrontation isn’t within reach? Why, reach for your pen and paper of course because nothing get its across better than words. This hilarious site features some of the best passive aggressive notes out there for every occasion: parking failures, stolen stuff, incompetence at work..etc. The length that some people will go through to try and make their point across is both terrifying and funny. I tried to find a favorite of mine to post but all of them are just as interesting as the next so I highly recommend you take a look at the site!

P.S. Even I’ve written a passive aggressive note that would be worthy enough to post on here. Unfortunately the person it was intended for was probably too drunk to ever post it onto here. I’ve also been a recipient of a passive aggressive note though it did err to the side of polite and informative than sarcastic and aggressive.

Forgotten Bookmarks

“I work at a used and rare bookstore, and I buy books from people everyday. These are the personal, funny, heartbreaking and weird things I fin in those books.”

I randomly came across this site and thought I’d share it with you. I love sites that feature little things, especially lost little things with the world. This particular website displays the many different bookmarks that are often left behind in old books from previous owners. Sometimes they’re standard bookmarks, sometimes they’re photos or old letters and sometimes they can be just about any old random object to indicate where the reader left off. He’s also found hidden messages on the insides of the books as well. I’ve taken a brief look at some of the books and was intrigued by what has been found by the creator of the site Michael. I’d suggest having a look if you have the chance, especially for you book lovers out there. Read more of this post

I Hate Bad Service!

Ever encountered such bad service from a restaurant, company or person that your fury was seeping through every part of your body? As a consumer, often left shocked at the practices and policies of some businesses, your value has been undermined and sometimes your money taken with it. Wonder what you can do about it to get back at those awful people without killing anyone in the process due to your rage? The best way to get back at them is to spread the word and boycott.

Some people might be under the impress that such a tactic isn’t enough to make a difference but don’t under-estimate the power of ‘word-of-mouth’. Many great events started this way and as one individual you hold a lot of power. This is certainly something that my parents have advocated to me. Don’t take it lying down when you know you are completely within your rights to complain and seek rectification for your experience.

So where can you begin your ranting process? Well there’s a lot of great forums out there to spread the word but I came across this one particular one that I spent some time reading, becoming aware of some of the practices of certain people/businesses. And let’s face it, the name couldn’t be more appropriate.

OMG Facts – who woulda known?

OMG Facts is the last site I’ll be featuring from the Spartz Network. The story of its creation reads at this:

“OMG Facts was originally a Twitter account created by 16-year-old Adorian Deck in September 2009. At various times throughout the day, Adorian would tweet random facts he’d discovered. Within four months, the account had reached 300,000 followers and was being followed by celebrities.

In the meantime, Gaby Montero and Emerson Spartz, founders of GivesMeHope, were inspired by OMG Facts to create a facts site and saw several opportunities. Their first observation: what about people who don’t use Twitter? Second, they thought there must be a better way to choose which facts to publish than the unscientific method Adorian used on Twitter.

With help from fellow Notre Dame alumni John Culkin (’03), Gaby and Emerson had spent the second half of 2009 modifying GivesMeHope’s script to ensure that the best stories were published on the home page.

Then they had an idea – use GivesMeHope’s user-moderation system and create a facts site that ensures ONLY the most interesting facts get published. They built the site, gave it a ridiculous name, and were about to launch. Then, they decided to talk to Adorian to see if it made sense to partner up and name the site OMG Facts. He liked the idea of expanding OMG Facts, and the site was launched shortly after.”About
